Every year there seems to be one guy in each sport that captivates everyone and that is all the sports world ever talks about. Such as Tiger Woods 5-6 years ago when he was at the top of his game winning Masters left and right. This year we have had a double headed monster of the hype athlete….Tim Tebow and Jeremy Lin. I have nothing against either of these guys personally but I do not think these guys have earned this type of publicity.
Both Tebow and Lin seem like great guys but they are both only in the second years of their young careers, and every time I turn on the TV all I hear about is “Linsanity” and “Tebow-mania”. Both have made an impact with their strings of consecutive wins, but neither have been a starter for a full season yet! Lets wait until teams have more tape on them and have had time to make schemes to stop them, and then we can judge how good they are.
Another reason why I think they are blowing these stories out of proportion is because they both represent big markets, this includes Lin being the first Asian-American to play in the NBA, and Tim Tebow who is extremely open about his Christianity faith. These two have in common a couple of things; one being the fact that they come up with wins in the 4th quarter, and two is that they are also very unrefined and commit a lot of mistakes. The mistakes that they make are often overshadowed by the fact that most of the public wants them to succeed because of their race or beliefs.
What does this have to do with Tiger Woods?
Tiger Woods was praised for being of a mixed heritage, but that was not all. Tiger was heralded as the best golfer that many of us have ever seen. He did this every week for years not for just a couple of weekends one year. Tiger dominated all of his competition to the point where they thought he was going to win no matter what.
So all I ask is that we get back to rewarding people for being great over an extended period of time, and not just the greatest things that are going on now.
